09 Sep Home Economics Visit
Home Economics students (5th Year and TY Food Studies) welcomed Bord Bia Food Consultant Maire Dufficy to the school’s HE room on a recent bright and sunny September morning. Maire began her presentation by giving a talk on the Billion Euro Irish Food Industry and informed us that it really is hugely successful, globally, despite the current recession, with current markets expanding in Asia, particularly into Singapore.
Maire gave us an insight into how Bord Bia would support and promote our food business if we were to invest in this type of career in the future. She showcased a few products from some of the current food entrepreneurs including ‘Green Saffron Spices’ from Cork, ‘Corleggy’ Goats Cheese from Cavan and of course, local Co. Louth product ‘Danucci’ chocolates.
Maire continued to tickle our taste buds by demonstrating some amazing dishes, while at the same time reminding us of the importance of healthy eating, enjoying our food and of course, supporting Irish produce and home grown food as much as possible. We couldn’t wait to taste the food and you just knew by everyone’s expression that all the dishes tasted amazing. We also got some recipe sheets on ‘how to’. The dishes we tasted were Chilli jam, Fridge Omelette, Classic Beef Stirfry, Marinated Pork with a Chickpea Salad and can be found on http://www.bordbia.ie.
It was a great start to 5th Year H.E. as it was a really enjoyable and yet informative morning. (Report by Ms. A. Byrne with input from Zoe Berkery 5 Red)
